Optimization of red blood cell unit storage during SARS-COV-2 Pandemic: adopting new strategies to ensure supply in a decentralized blood bank in Brazil

Highlights
We describe strategies adopted to manage RBC inventories during Covid-19 pandemic. We demonstrate impact on positive RBC units balance of improving blood collection, restricting criteria for transfusion, prioritizing use of RBC units close to expiration date by investing in logistics and avoiding non-isogroup transfusions. These resulted in a scenario where supply of RBC units could be maintained in a decentralized blood bank even with adverse conditions.
