Objectives: Transfusion is a vital resource to healthcare used in a wide range of clinical services. Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Juiz de Fora (SCMJF) performs about 18 thousand surgeries per year and 70.68% of the services are destined to the Unified Health System, being a reference in the Zona da Mata Mineira. Fundação Hemominas Juiz de Fora (FH) has the mission to offer blood components to the network of contracting hospitals. The present study aims to identify the type of blood component requested by SCMJF from FH. Material and methods: This is a cross-sectional study of a quantitative nature, with analysis of 492 forms for the identification of blood components requested by SCMJF from FH in the period from January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2019. The data were obtained through automated forms generated by HEMOTE PLUS®, a software system used by FH, which allows complete management of hemotherapy services and which interconnects all stages of the blood transfusion process. This system strictly follows the ANVISA rules and the legislation in force by the Ministry of Health in the period. For statistical analysis, the Chi-square test was performed using the statistical program IBM SPSS Statistics 14® USA. Results: During the study period, 2223 transfusions were performed. The main blood component used was the Packed Red Blood Cell (PRBC), with 1273 transfusions (57.26%). Isolated PRBC was used in 376 patients (76.42%), followed by Platelet Concentrate (17/3.5%), Fresh Frozen Plasma (15/3.04%) and Cryoprecipitate (01/0.2%). Considering the transfusion combined with other blood components, the PRBC totals 455 patients (92.47%). There was statistical significance when correlating the type of blood component with the total number of transfusions (p<0.05). Discussion: Knowing the profile of the most commonly used blood components in a reference institution allows the entire uptake process to be optimized, including with regard to both elective surgeries, as well as a possible predictability of tendency for other cases attended, such as emergencies, patients with chronic anemia and/or other hematological diseases. Thus, by showing, for example, the extensive use of PRBC in the evaluated period, this study confirms the importance of maintaining minimum reserves to meet the needs of the institution. Conclusions: The data found are in agreement with the literature and reiterates the importance of blood donation, in view of the high requisition of blood components by a reference hospital.
