The HEMOCIONE association is a nonprofit organization which aims to promote blood donation among young adults. From the first campaign, organized by our founder, Vitor Pinheiro, while still in highschool, it was clear an individual blood drive would not even begin to tackle the problem at hand. With that in mind, the HEMOCIONE initiative (name derived from “Hemo” = blood and “Emocione” for “to cause emotion”) was created with the intent to promote a culture of regular blood donation. Convincing prospective donors to spend their day attending an often not-so-near Blood Bank, to undergo a not-so-convenient procedure by themselves had several caveats. Thus, the institution's goal was directed towards making the process of blood donation as painless and pleasant as can be. The initial idea: organizing Blood Drives with the municipal Blood Collection agency (HEMORIO) in educational institutions across the city. In this sense, mitigating the inconvenience of distance and providing a familiar and friendly environment for blood donation. The focus on educational institutions was also not coincidental: we believe in the crucial role the younger generation has in becoming the next generation of donors. Even those who were unable to participate due to age or other restrictions learn from early on the importance of lack of blood and how simple it is to participate in the solution to this problem. During 2018 and 2019, 5 campaigns were organized among prominent educational institutions from Rio de Janeiro totalling 588 registered prospective donors and 489 completed donations, with marketing efforts and information on blood donation reaching over 50000 people on Facebook. Each campaign improving on the latter with its amicable atmosphere, snacks, T-shirts, live art and music performances from partner institutions and persons. During 2020, however, the Covid pandemic saw us helpless towards the everlasting need for blood and inability to organize blood drives. In 2021, with some improval in the state of things, HEMOCIONE, in conjunction with HEMORIO, organized 4 events, gathering 550 prospective donors while implementing social distancing and safety measures to guarantee donor wellbeing. In 2022, HEMOCIONE continued to grow, with 13 editions, taking its first step in expanding to other states. This year saw the first edition in the city of São Paulo - the Student's Blood Donation Week. Renowned educational institutions such as Insper, Albert Einstein Israeli Institute and Getulio Vargas Foundation united in incentivizing blood donation amongst their students. 300 blood units were donated during said week and 1135 blood units during the year of 2022. For 2023, HEMOCIONE intends to continue its effort towards promoting a new and evergrowing generation of reliable blood donors. For this, it counts on the help of volunteers from the most varied backgrounds, from Communications and Marketing to Medicine. The latter make up the foundation's Research department, which aims to improve the efficacy of Hemocione's efforts through evidence-based strategies and aiding in the dissemination of reliable, scientifically accurate information on the process of blood donation and the need for blood. During the last 90 days alone, HEMOCIONE's promotional and educational posts were seen a total of 51000 times solely on Instagram (@Hemocione). The first semester of 2023 saw 12 Blood Drives organized, amassing 1149 prospective donors and 916 units of blood so far.
